How to sign a PDF on any device, free

Whether you need to sign a PDF yourself or get it signed by other people, here’s how to do it on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android, without paying.

On any device, with mndok (free)

This works the same in every modern browser and gives you a signed PDF with a Certificate of Completion.

  1. Create a free mndok account.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. Add yourself as the signer (and anyone else who needs to sign).
  4. Place a signature field, plus any name, date or other fields you need.
  5. Open the signing link from your email, draw or type your signature, and finish.
  6. Download the signed PDF.

On Windows

Microsoft Edge opens PDFs and lets you draw on them with its ink tools, and free readers such as Adobe Acrobat Reader include a Fill & Sign option. Both place a picture of your signature on the page. For anything important, use an e-signature service so there’s a record of who signed and when.

On a Mac

Preview, which comes with macOS, can add a signature: open the PDF, show the Markup toolbar, choose the signature tool, and create a signature with your trackpad or by holding a signed piece of paper up to the camera. Then place it on the page and save.

On iPhone and iPad

Open the PDF in the Files app or from Mail, tap the Markup button, tap the plus button and choose Add Signature. Draw your signature, place it, and tap Done. On iPad you can sign with Apple Pencil.

On Android

Android has no single built-in tool for signing PDFs, so it depends on your apps. The free Adobe Acrobat Reader app has Fill & Sign, or you can use mndok in Chrome: it works on any phone, with fields sized for touch.

Getting a PDF signed by other people

Emailing a PDF back and forth for signatures is slow and leaves no reliable record. With mndok you upload the PDF once, add each signer, choose whether they sign at once or in order, and place their fields. You can see when each person opens the email, views the document and fills in fields, and everyone gets the signed PDF with a certificate at the end.

Signing PDFs: quick answers

What is the easiest way to sign a PDF?

Upload it to a free e-signature service such as mndok, add yourself as the signer, place a signature field and sign in your browser. It works the same on every device.

Is pasting a picture of my signature legally valid?

It can be, but it’s weak evidence: it doesn’t show who placed it or when. An e-signature service records consent, timestamps, IP addresses and an audit trail, which is far easier to rely on if a signature is ever questioned.

How do I get a PDF signed by someone else?

Upload the PDF to mndok, add their name and email, place their fields and send. They get a link by email and sign in their browser without creating an account.
